Between Heaven and Earth
In tribute to David Lynch

About the Album

Between Heaven and Earth is a tribute to David Lynch, who cast Alicia Witt in her first film role, as Alia in Dune, when she was seven, and with whom she worked four times and shared a lifelong friendship. The album’s thirteen original songs reflect on love, intuition, grief, and the connections that remain with us. It closes with “The Director,” recorded in one uninterrupted take on the final day of sessions.

Produced by Joe Henry, the album was recorded live over five days in New York City, with Witt on traditional pop piano and vocals alongside a band assembled for the project, voice and instruments captured together with minimal overdubs. “Thank You,” written and performed with 4x GRAMMY® winner John Paul White, turns heartbreak into gratitude.

Alicia Witt and John Paul White, Thank You single artwork
“Witt’s best album to date… Ballads sometimes recall Sarah McLachlan, breathe the spirit of the Great American Songbook and, in more playful moments, exude some of the charm of Stephen Sondheim’s musical evergreens… Producer Joe Henry imbues the songs with his signature analog elegance.”
Rolling Stone Germany
“Another thoughtful, appealing outing from the performing-arts polymath… a warm, wistful album that spends at least as much time on gratitude as on grief… Witt’s knack for elegant melodies is ever-present.”
AllMusic
“Gorgeously sung… if this is what ‘directing from the beyond’ sounds like, it’s rather beautiful.”
The Times UK
“She doesn’t need to push a song toward you. She draws you into it.”
Women’s International Music Network
“The record is a tribute to David Lynch that blends mystical, piano-led jazz ballads and acoustic folk stylings from The Civil Wars’ John Paul White.”
Nashville Scene
“An intimate, spontaneous album.”
